What I love about this photo is that it paints a very different picture to how climate change is normally portrayed. It’s no polar bear or melting ice. It’s no wildfire or flooded town. Instead it offers a window into the rough reality of industrial, consumer society.
It reveals the shadow of daily infrastructure that lies behind our consumer choices. Bacon is not a neatly packaged item displayed on a shelf that only incurs an environmental cost simply through our purchase. Instead, as this image captures, behind this lurks a network of industries and emissions, taking place under the cover of the dark dawn of our neatly packaged society.
Through this shot, the light of awareness reveals a hidden cause of climate change. Subsequently, unlike traditional shots of climate change symptoms (like those mentioned above) this is something that can be targeted, something that can be changed. How to tackle climate change then becomes slightly less elusive and slightly less a daunting task.

Yes, the lighting in the photo makes the bacon industry appear as a covert underground operation. But will enough people give up bacon voluntarily, or will the government have to apply restrictions?
